Any cultural tour of Albania should begin in its capital, Tirana. A city that seamlessly blends modernity with tradition, Tirana offers a glimpse into Albania’s turbulent yet fascinating past. At the heart of the city is Skanderbeg Square, named after Albania’s national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg. Berat: The City of a Thousand Windows
Moving south, Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture and historical charm. Known as the “City of a Thousand Windows” because of the many large windows adorning the old stone houses, Berat is one of Albania’s most picturesque towns. In addition, the Onufri Museum houses works by Albania’s most famous medieval iconographer. Onufri whose religious frescoes and icons are notable for their striking use of red pigment.
Gjirokastër: The Stone City Cultural Excursions
Further south lies Gjirokastër, another UNESCO World Heritage Site and a striking example of a well-preserved Ottoman town. Often referred to as the “Stone City” due to its slate-roofed houses, Gjirokastër offers a journey into Albania’s architectural and cultural past.
